Sheets, Duvets & Pillows: A No-Nonsense Bedding Guide

Thread count is not the whole story

Anything from 300 to 500 is excellent; numbers beyond that usually mean multi-ply yarns counted creatively, not better sheets. Fiber and weave determine how bedding actually feels.

Cotton weaves: percale vs. sateen

Percale is crisp, matte and breathable — the classic cool hotel-sheet feel, ideal for hot sleepers. Sateen is smoother, heavier and slightly lustrous, and feels warmer. Neither is better; they are different sleep temperatures.

Beyond cotton

Linen sheets are the most breathable and get softer for years, at the cost of a rumpled look. Bamboo-derived lyocell is silky and moisture-wicking. Microfiber is budget-friendly and wrinkle-free but sleeps hot.

Duvet fill: down vs. alternative

Down is lighter and lofts better for the same warmth; quality synthetic alternatives are hypoallergenic, machine-washable and cost far less. Check fill power for down (600+ is good) and weight for alternatives.

Pillows depend on how you sleep

Side sleepers need a high, firm pillow to fill the shoulder gap; back sleepers a medium loft; stomach sleepers a thin, soft one. Replace pillows every one to two years — a folded pillow that stays folded is done.

Wash before first use

New bedding carries finishing treatments. One wash softens the fabric and sets the weave — and always check the care label before hot-washing anything with elastic.
