Choosing the Right Air Fryer: Size, Style and Features That Matter
Capacity is the decision that matters most
A 2–3 quart air fryer suits one or two people; a family of four needs 5–6 quarts to cook a meal in one batch. Overcrowding the basket is the number one cause of soggy, unevenly cooked food — when in doubt, size up.
Basket vs. oven style
Basket models preheat faster, crisp better and are easier to shake mid-cook — ideal for fries, wings and weeknight sides. Oven-style units offer racks, rotisserie spits and more capacity, doubling as a small countertop oven, but they take up permanent counter space.
Features worth paying for
A dishwasher-safe basket, a viewing window and accurate temperature control make daily use pleasant. Presets are nice but not essential — most people settle on the same two or three settings anyway.
Features you can skip
App connectivity, voice control and a dozen cooking modes rarely earn their price premium. A simple dial model that is easy to clean gets used far more often than a complicated one.
Counter space and noise
Air fryers are bulky and most run at a noticeable hum. Measure your counter and check the appliance's footprint before buying — a machine that lives in a cabinet gets used half as often as one that stays out.
